[Died] September 13, 1939. Toensberg Norwegian novelist. A representative writer of Nynorsk (Lansmål), one of the official national languages of Norway, he was known for his profound and solemn style of writing, depicting people caught between the contradictions between the individual and the masses, and between tradition and progress. His representative works include the epic Juvikfolke (6 volumes, 1918-23), as well as the trilogy Medmenneske (29), Ragnhild (31), and Siste leveåre (33), and Menneske og maktene (38).

ノルウェーの小説家。ノルウェーの公認国語の一つランスモール (→ニューノルスク ) の代表的作家で，おもに個人と民衆，伝統と進歩の矛盾抗争の板ばさみになる人間を描き，重厚森厳な作風で知られた。代表作は大作『ユビクの人々』 Juvikfolke (6巻，1918～23) をはじめ，『同胞』 Medmenneske (29) ，『ラグンヒル』 Ragnhild (31) ，『晩年』 Siste leveåre (33) の3部作，『人間と力』 Menneske og maktene (38) など。
