Komebatazakura - Komebatazakura

Japanese: コメバツガザクラ - こめばつがざくら
Komebatazakura - Komebatazakura
A small shrub of the Ericaceae family that grows on gravelly soil in high mountains. Its Japanese name comes from the fact that its leaves are as small as rice grains and the whole plant resembles Tsugazakura. The stem branches and lies prostrate on the ground, 5-15cm tall, with three small leaves arranged in whorls. The leaves are leathery and elliptical, 5-10mm long and 3-5mm wide. In summer, the plant produces flowers in whorls of three at the ends of the branches. The corolla is white, urn-shaped, with five lobes at the end, and 4-5mm long. There are ten stamens, and the anthers have two thorn-like projections on the back that scatter pollen when touched by insects.
