Japanese: シノリガモ(晨鳧) - シノリガモ（英語表記）harlequin duck

A bird of the Anatidae family (illustration). It breeds on the North Pacific coast, Iceland, and Greenland, and spends the winter at sea further south. It migrates to Japan as a winter bird, and lives in small groups on the coasts and seas of northern Japan. However, it has recently been discovered that some breed in mountain streams in northern Japan. It prefers rough coastal areas with many rocky reefs, and dives to catch shellfish and other creatures to eat. It is about 43 cm long. Sexes are different, with males having beautiful blue, chestnut, and white patterns. Females are dark brown all over their bodies, with white spots at the base of their beak and behind their eyes.

カモ目カモ科の鳥（イラスト）。北太平洋沿岸，アイスランドおよびグリーンランドで繁殖し，冬期にはより南の海上で越冬する。日本には冬鳥として渡来し，北日本の海岸や海上に小群で生息する。しかし，最近，北日本の山間の渓流で繁殖しているものがいることが知られた。岩礁の多い荒磯を好み，潜水して貝類などをとって食べる。全長約43cm。雌雄異色で，雄は青色，栗色，白色の美しい模様がある。雌は全身暗褐色で，くちばしの基部と眼の後に白斑がある。
