Isaza - Isaza (English spelling) Lake Biwa goby

A freshwater fish belonging to the family Gobiidae, order Perciformes, class Osteichthyes. It is one of the endemic fishes of Lake Biwa. During the day, it gathers in large schools in the northern part of the lake at depths of 30 to 60 meters, but at night it rises to the surface. This is a unique ecology among the gobiidae, many of which live benthic lives. Its body is light in color. It spawns from April to June. The parent fish move to shallow areas of the gravel bottom in the northern part of the lake and lay egg masses on the underside of stones. The male parent fish protects the eggs. It feeds on small animals such as amphipods and shrimps. It becomes a parent fish one or two years after birth, reaching a body length of 7.5 cm. It has a lifespan of two and a half years. This species is one of the important fish species in the fishing industry of Lake Biwa, but the catch varies significantly periodically. It is sold in the market as tsukudani (food preserved in soy sauce).

硬骨魚綱スズキ目ハゼ科に属する淡水魚。琵琶湖(びわこ)の特産魚の一つである。昼間は湖北部の水深30～60メートルの深所に大群をなしているが、夜間は表層近くまで浮上する。底生生活を送る種類の多いハゼ科の魚のなかで、この生態は特異である。体は淡色。産卵期は4～6月。親魚は湖北部の礫底(れきてい)の浅所へ移動して、石の下面に卵塊を産み付ける。雄の親魚が卵を守る。餌(えさ)はヨコエビ類、エビ類などの小動物である。生後1年ないし2年で親魚となり、体長7.5センチメートルに達する。寿命は2年半。本種は琵琶湖における水産業上の重要魚種の一つであるが、周期的に著しい漁獲量の変動がある。佃煮(つくだに)として市場に出回る。
