A city in central Fukuoka Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1943. It occupies the basin and hills of the Nakamotoji River and Hikosan River, tributaries of the Onga River. The city center flourished as the largest coal mining town in the Chikuho coalfield since the mid-Meiji period, with the coal mining towns of Ita and Gotoji at its core, but by 1970 all of the coal mines had closed. The Shiratori Industrial Park, completed in 1991, is home to over 50 companies manufacturing auto parts, food products, telephones, and more. It is served by the Hitahikosan Line, Gotoji Line, and Heisei Chikuho Railway. The Kawado Festival at Fuuchi Hachiman Shrine is famous. Fukuoka Prefectural University is located here. Area: 54.55 km2 . Population: 50,605 (2010).

福岡県中部の市。1943年市制。遠賀(おんが)川の支流中元寺川,彦山川の盆地と丘陵地を占める。中心市街は明治中期以来の炭鉱町の伊田と後藤寺を主体に筑豊炭田最大の炭鉱都市として繁栄したが,1970年までに全炭鉱が閉山。1991年に完成した白鳥工業団地には50社以上の企業が進出し,自動車部品,食料品,電話機などの工業が行われる。日田彦山線,後藤寺線,平成筑豊鉄道が通じる。風治(ふうち)八幡宮の川渡祭は有名。福岡県立大学がある。54.55km2。5万605人(2010)。
