Abbreviation for Geheime Staatspolizei, the secret state police of Nazi Germany. Founded in Prussia by Hermann Goering after the Nazis came to power in 1933. After Hermann Himmler became its director in 1934, the organization expanded throughout Germany. Using a combination of informing and suppressing policies, it thoroughly suppressed opponents, especially Jews and Marxists, and played a part in the mass murders. Along with the SS (Hitler's SS) and the concentration camps, it was the most brutal and violent organization of the Nazi dictatorship. In 1936, it was merged with the Security Police (SD), an organization of the SS, and during World War II it became the most brutal organization for cracking down on Jews, resistance activists, and prisoners of war in occupied territories.
