This refers to the phenomenon in which cells or individuals that contain a certain gene exhibit a phenotype similar to that which would be observed if that gene were mutated when they are exposed to special environmental conditions (temperature treatment, drug administration, etc.) at a certain stage of their development. For example, wild-type Drosophila melanogaster can produce a brown pigment called xanthommatin from tryptophan via kynurenine, which gives the eyes a dark brown color. 表現型模写ともいう。ある遺伝子をもつ細胞や個体がその生長段階のある時期に,特殊な環境条件(温度処理,薬物投与など)を与えられると,その遺伝子が突然変異を起こしたときに示すと同じような表現型をとる現象をさす。たとえば,キイロショウジョウバエの野生型はトリプトファンからキヌレニンを経由してキサントマチンという褐色色素をつくることができ,この色素により目は茶褐色になる。この色素の生成に関与する遺伝子の一つ,+vがvsに突然変異したハエは朱色の目をもつ。
