Deposit at notice - tsuuchiyokin

Japanese:
Deposit at notice - tsuuchiyokin

There is no maximum deposit period, but the period of grace is 7 days from the date of deposit, during which withdrawals cannot be made, and two or more days' notice is required for withdrawals. There is also a minimum deposit amount per unit. If withdrawals are made within the grace period, the interest rate for ordinary deposits applies. Withdrawal notice may be given verbally or by telephone. As of 2008, the minimum deposit amount varies depending on the type of financial institution, with banks, agricultural cooperatives, and fishery cooperatives setting the minimum deposit amount at 50,000 yen and Shinkin banks setting the minimum deposit amount at 10,000 yen. The interest rate is variable, and as of August 2008, the interest rate is the same as that for ordinary deposits at most financial institutions, but some financial institutions set it slightly higher than that for ordinary deposits. The interest is paid in a lump sum at the time of cancellation, calculated on a pro rata basis based on a 365-day year. Corporate interest is subject to comprehensive taxation, but individuals are taxed at 20% (national tax 15% and local tax 5%) except in the case of the Maruyū system.

The principal of deposits at notice is guaranteed by the depositing financial institution. In addition, since deposits are covered by the deposit insurance system, up to 10 million yen of principal and interest per financial institution are protected. If you have multiple accounts at one financial institution, settlement deposits such as current deposits and non-interest-bearing ordinary deposits are fully protected, so the total principal of deposits at notice and other deposit accounts excluding those settlement deposits is protected up to 10 million yen and their interest.

In addition, there have been some types of notice deposits sold in which the grace period is set up until two days before the anniversary date one month after the deposit date, the minimum deposit amount is 500,000 yen or more, and the interest rate is set higher in each tier as the deposit amount increases. There are no restrictions on who can make a notice deposit, but corporations are by far the most common. Corporations use them to temporarily manage surplus funds until they can be used to settle purchases and pay year-end bonuses. For individuals, they can be used as a means of managing funds raised for housing or durable consumer goods.
