It is sometimes translated as pseudo variable. In econometrics, in addition to "real variables" that show quantitatively measured values such as production volume, it is necessary to analyze qualitative and attribute variables that cannot be expressed quantitatively, such as the presence or absence of a large-scale strike or the gender of employees. Dummy variables are special variables created for the purpose of incorporating qualitative and attribute factors into econometric models, and usually take the value of 0 or 1. For example, the consumption function for wartime and peacetime is C _t = α ₁ + β ₁ Y _t + ε _t ... wartime C _t = α ₂ + β ₂ Y _t + ε _t ... peacetime.

擬変数と訳されることもある。計量経済学では，生産量のような定量的に測定された値を示す〈実変数〉のほかに，大規模なストライキの有無や従業員の性別のような数量的に表現できない定性的，属性的なものを分析する必要がある。定性的，属性的な要因を計量経済モデルに取り入れる目的で作られた特別な変数がダミー変数で，通常0または1の値をとる。たとえば，戦時と平和時の消費関数を　C_t＝α₁＋β₁Y_t＋ε_t　……戦時　　C_t＝α₂＋β₂Y_t＋ε_t　……平和時　とする。
