Tonic - Kyosouzai

This refers to medicines that aim to generally improve illness in a broad sense, such as restoring metabolic function, improving nutritional status, replenishing blood, strengthening the body's sexual appetite, and recovering from fatigue. Examples of such medicines include altered tonics, bitter tonics, blood-replenishing tonics, and nutritious tonics. Altered tonics are intended to improve constitution, and examples include arsenic trioxide preparations. Bitter tonics include cinchona preparations, which are bittersweet agents that stimulate the secretion of gastric juices, and blood-replenishing tonics include iron preparations. Tonics aim to restore function through nutrition, and examples include various vitamins, proteins, carbohydrates, minerals, and amino acids. Ginseng is often used in Chinese medicine. Recently, only nutritious tonics are used, including nutritional supplements, and medicinal liquors and energy drinks are commonly used.

新陳代謝機能の回復、栄養状態の改善、補血、強精、疲労回復など、広い意味での病体の一般的改善を目的とした薬剤をいい、変質強壮剤、苦味強壮剤、補血強壮剤、滋養強壮剤などがある。変質強壮剤とは体質を改善するという意味で、亜ヒ酸剤などがある。苦味強壮剤には胃液の分泌を促す苦味剤としてキナ製剤が、補血強壮剤には鉄剤がある。滋養強壮剤は栄養によって機能の回復を図るもので、各種ビタミン剤、タンパク質、炭水化物、ミネラル、アミノ酸などがあげられる。漢方では人参(にんじん)がよく用いられる。最近では滋養強壮剤だけが栄養剤を含めて用いられ、薬用酒やドリンク剤がよく使われる。
