A former town in Haibara County in the middle reaches of the Oi River in central Shizuoka Prefecture. Most of the area is mountainous and has beautiful forests of cedar and cypress. Before the Oigawa Railway was opened, rafting on the Oi River was very popular. Settlements developed along the Oi River and its tributaries, and the town is a major producer of Kawane tea. The riverbed lake Nomori-no-ike and the dam lake Sasama-ko are scenic spots. Incorporated into Shimada City in April 2008. 120.48 km2 . 6,030 people (2005). 静岡県中部,大井川中流域の榛原(はいばら)郡の旧町。大部分は山地でスギ,ヒノキの美林が多く,大井川鉄道開通前は大井川の筏(いかだ)流しが盛んであった。大井川とその支流沿いに集落が発達,川根茶の大産地。河跡湖の野守(のもり)ノ池,ダム湖の笹間湖は景勝地。2008年4月島田市へ編入。120.48km2。6030人(2005)。
