Angklung - Angklung (English spelling)

Indonesian bamboo percussion instruments. There are two main types:

(1) A type of rattle (a shaking idiophone) used mainly in the Sunda region (West Java). Two to four bamboo tubes tuned to octaves are placed in the grooves of a lattice frame, which is supported with one hand and played by shaking it with the other. Today, it is often tuned to a Western scale and used as a melodic instrument played by multiple people in turn, but it was originally a rhythmic instrument, played in an ensemble with multiple layers of different rhythmic patterns from each person. Recently, a set has appeared in which the instruments are arranged in musical scale order like piano keys on a long frame, and are played by one or several people. It is found mainly in Java, but also in Sumatra and Borneo, and in Bali, ensembles with various other instruments, such as gamelan angklung, have developed in various rituals.

(2) Bamboo xylophone from the Banyuwangi region of East Java. 12 to 14 bamboo tubes are attached to a wooden frame with strings, the frame is fixed to a stand, and it is played with long wooden or bamboo sticks. It is used in gamelan angklung, which is based on this instrument. In Bali there is a similar type of bamboo xylophone called grantang.
