A general term for a group of birds in the Wagtail family. Slightly larger than a sparrow, with a long tail. There are 11 species of water birds in the world. Five species, the Grey Wagtail, White Wagtail, Grey Wagtail, Long-toed Lapwing, and Rock Wagtail, are found in Japan, and the first four breed in Japan. They walk along the water's edge to hunt for insects and wag their tails up and down. The Grey Wagtail is endemic to Japan. セキレイ科の一群の鳥の総称。スズメより少し大きく，尾が長い。水辺の鳥で世界に11種。キセキレイ，ハクセキレイ，セグロセキレイ，ツメナガセキレイ，イワミセキレイの５種が日本に産し，うち前４種は日本で繁殖。水辺を歩いて昆虫等をあさり，尾を上下に振る。セグロセキレイは日本固有種。イワミセキレイは少数日本で記録され，尾を左右に振る。
