Juba River

Japanese: ジューバ[川]（英語表記）Juba River

A river in northeastern Africa. It originates in the highlands of southern Ethiopia, flows southeast into Somalia, and empties into the Indian Ocean north of Kismayu. It is about 1,500 km long. It joins the Webi-Shabelli, its largest tributary, in the lower reaches. The lower reaches are the largest agricultural region in Somalia, where bananas, corn, sugarcane, and other crops are cultivated, beginning with Italian plantations. Until 1925, the river was the border between Italian Somaliland and British East Africa.

アフリカ北東部を流れる川。Giubaとも綴る。エチオピア南部の高原に源を発し，南東に流れてソマリアに入り，キスマユの北でインド洋に注ぐ。全長約1500km。下流部で最大の支流ウェビ･シェベリ川と合流する。下流域はソマリア第1の農業地帯で，イタリア人のプランテーションに始まるバナナやトウモロコシ，サトウキビなどが栽培される。1925年まではこの川がイタリア領ソマリランドとイギリス領東アフリカの境界線であった。
