A heretical group in medieval Europe. They followed heretical theories that arose frequently in France, Germany, Italy, and other countries from the early 13th century to the first half of the 15th century. The term "free spirit" was based on the assertion that religious adepts who achieved mystical union with God could act freely and without any external constraints. However, the term was often used in the same era as a term of criticism, and was used to describe moral deviation. There is a theory that the Beguines were the main organizational body of the group at first, but it would be more appropriate to consider that they were based on a more diverse range of groups.
