Ursa Major (the Great Bear)

Japanese: おおぐま座(大熊座) - おおぐまざ（英語表記）Ursa Major

Abbreviation: UMa. A large constellation in the northern sky. The seven bright stars that make up the main part of the constellation are called the Big Dipper, and in Europe they were also likened to a large spoon or a wheel. The measure of the dipper is the body of a bear, and the handle is a long tail, but it is compared to the small dipper that rises from the North Star, Ursa Major and Ursa Minor. In Greek mythology, it is said to be the nymph Callisto, who was loved by the great god Zeus, and was turned into a bear by Hera or Artemis. The alpha star is a red giant star called Zoobe, with a magnitude of 1.9 and a spectral type of K0.

略号UMa。北天の大星座。星座の主体をなすのは北斗七星と呼ばれる7個の輝星で，ヨーロッパでも大さじとか，車の形に見たてていた。ひしゃくの升は熊の胴体，柄は長いしっぽになるが，北極星から立ち上る小型のひしゃくに対し，おおぐま，こぐまと対比される。ギリシア神話では大神ゼウスの愛をうけたニンフのカリストで，ヘラまたはアルテミスによって熊にされたという。α星はズーベと呼ばれる1.9等の赤色巨星でスペクトル型はK0。
