Hayashimai - Hayashi

Japanese: 囃子舞 - はやしまい
Hayashimai - Hayashi
Among the dances performed in kyogen and festivals around the country, this is a performing art in which the performers dance with entertaining gestures and hand movements while chanting words such as "Merry, happy" to enliven the atmosphere. In kyogen, it is incorporated into the small dance "Uzura Mai" that appears in "Kirokuda" and "Jizo Mai," and is performed to the accompaniment of chanting "Don't look at the quail dance" and "Don't look at the Jizo dance." Also, in the "Okura Toraakira Hon Kyogenshu" from the early Edo period, many dances can be seen, such as the "Plum Dance," "Fan Dance," "Brush Dance," "Bird Dance," "Shell Dance," "Chrysanthemum Dance," "Star Dance," "Moon Dance," "Ferry Dance," "Pull Dance," "Pine Dance," and "Uttare Dance" (→Okura Toraakira). It has also been passed down among folk performing arts, and the Ayakomai dance performed at Kurohime Shrine in Metani, Kashiwazaki City, Niigata Prefecture, has 22 songs with lyrics that are common to the "Okura Toraakirahon Kyogenshu," such as "Ebisu Mai," "Daikoku Mai," "Saitori Mai," "Ureshiki Mai," "Kame no Mai," "Shojo Mai," "Sakana Sashi Mai," and "Danjiri Mai." Similar dances exist in Aomori, Iwate, and Akita prefectures.
