Barbascome

It is a genus of the Scrophulariaceae family found mainly along the Mediterranean coast, and there are about 250 species, but in Japan only a few species are cultivated for flower beds and for cut flowers, and are treated as spring-sown biennials. The common mullein has dense soft hairs all over the plant, an upright stem that can reach a height of 2m. In summer, the apex of the stem bears a spike of yellow flowers with five lobes in the corolla, which bloom from the bottom up. There are also smaller, almost hairless mulleins, and hybrids with different flower colors.

おもに地中海沿岸に分布するゴマノハグサ科の一属で250種ほどあるが，日本で花壇，切花用に栽培されるのは数種で，春まきの二年草として扱われる。普通にみられるビロードモウズイカは全株に軟毛を密生し，茎は直立して高さは2mに達する。夏，茎頂に花冠の５裂した黄色花を穂状につけ，下から咲いていく。これより小型でほとんど毛のないモウズイカや，花色に変化のある交雑種もある。
