A general term for reproduction that occurs without the union of gametes. It is the opposite of amphimixis, which is sexual reproduction by the union of gametes. It usually means parthenogenesis, but in a broader sense it also includes apogamy, in which gametophyte cells other than egg cells, such as synergid cells, do not fertilize, but produce sporophytes, and apospory, in which ferns produce prothallus from vegetative cells of sporophytes without the development of spores. An individual produced by apomixis is called an apomict. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
