Heavy media separation

Japanese: 重液選別 - じゅうえきせんべつ（英語表記）heavy media separation

When ore or coal, which is a collection of mineral particles with different specific gravities, is immersed in a liquid of appropriate specific gravity, the particles with high specific gravity sink and the particles with low specific gravity float, allowing the minerals to be separated based on their specific gravity differences. Heavy medium separation is a type of gravity separation that uses this principle for separation, and is also called gravity separation. The liquid used in heavy medium separation is called heavy medium. Heavy medium separation is used not only to separate ores and coal on an industrial scale, but also to investigate the composition of their components by specific gravity. This process is called float-sink analysis.

比重の異なる鉱物粒子の集りである鉱石あるいは石炭を適当な比重の液体中に浸漬すると，高比重の粒子は沈降し，低比重の粒子は浮上するので，比重差により鉱物を選別することができる。重液選別はこの原理を利用して選別する比重選別の一種で，重選ともいう。重液選別に使われる液体は重液と呼ばれる。重液選別は，鉱石や石炭を工業的な規模で選別するばかりでなく，これらの比重別成分構成を調べる目的にも使われている。この作業は浮沈分析と呼ばれている。
