...In the first half or middle of the century, Cruikshank, C. Keane, G. du Maurier, and Richard Doyle (1824-83) were active in England, W. Busch in Germany, and R. Toefer in Switzerland, all of whom were active in describing manners and telling nonsense stories. At the end of the century, many talented writers appeared, including Steinlen, Jean-Louis Forain (1852-1931), Caran d'Ache (1859-1909), Herman Paul, C. Leandre, and A. Robida in France, Olaf Gulbransson (1873-1958), Thomas Theodor Heine (1867-1948), Bruno Paul (1874-1968), and Coubin in Germany, and Rops and Ensor in Belgium. Other artists who left behind caricatures include the writers Hugo and E. Lear, the sculptor JG Chadeau, and the painters Puvis de Chavannes and Lautrec.

...It dealt with domestic and foreign affairs, cultural and religious issues, and social issues in a militant manner from an anti-government, anti-church, civil democratic standpoint, and often caused controversy. The secret of its success was a diverse ensemble of satirical cartoons by Thomas Theodor Heine (1867-1948) and Olaf Gulbransson (1916-61), and satirical writings by Thoma, Meyrink, Roda Roda (1872-1945), Alfred Polger (1873-1955), and Karl Kraus. It supported the war during World War I, and lost its reason for existence during the Nazi era when it became institutionalized. ...
