French harpsichordist and composer. He studied under his father, Jacques, and served as the royal spinetist from 1638 onwards, and also played the organ in the royal chapel. While he gained fame as a performer, he also adapted the style of lute music to the harpsichord, laying the foundations for a style of harpsichord music unique to France. He also discovered the talents of the three Couperin brothers, and nurtured the next generation of French harpsichordists, including Lebègue and d'Anglebert. In 1662, he handed over his position as royal spinetist to d'Anglebert, retired, and died in Paris.
