Lower limit

Japanese: 下限 - かげん（英語表記）lower limit

If there is a maximum lower bound for a set of real numbers A , then it is called the lower bound of A. Literally, it is the lower limit of A. It is also called the greatest lower bound. This comes from the fact that if there is a lower bound, then there are an infinite number of lower bounds, but among them there exists a maximum number, and this is called the lower bound. The definition of a lower bound can also be stated as follows. Given a set of real numbers a and a real number a , if x belongs to A , and if x ∈ A , then a ≦ x , and for any small positive number ε, if there exists an x such that a ≦ x < a - ε, x ∈ A , then a is called the lower bound of A.

実数の集合 A の下界のうちで最大のものがあるとき，それを A の下限という。文字どおり，A の下の限界のことである。最大下界ということもある。これは，下に有界であれば下界は無数にあるが，そのなかには最大数が存在し，これを下限というところからきている。下限の定義は次のようにいうこともできる。実数の集合 a と実数 a があって，x は A に属する x∈A ならば a≦x であり，どんな小さな任意の正の数 ε をとっても，a≦x＜a－ε ，x∈A を満足する x が存在するとき，a を A の下限という。
