King of France (reigned 1560-1574). Son of Henry II. Even after ascending to the throne, real power remained in the hands of his mother, Catherine de Medici. At the beginning of his reign, the religious wars (the French Wars of Religion) broke out, and the royal power was unstable due to the fierce conflict between Catholics and Protestants.
