Japanese: くつ(沓∥履) - くつ

Japanese footwear that covers and encases the foot. Made from leather, brocade, thread, hemp, or straw. Long-clog-shaped pottery has been excavated from ruins from the late Jomon period, and clay figurines of people from the Kofun period are also wearing long and short clogs, which are thought to be made of sewn leather. Gilt bronze clogs have been excavated from the Eda Funayama Kofun (Kumamoto Prefecture), and are thought to have been worn by local nobles during ceremonies as a symbol of their authority. During the Nara period, shoes such as seki no kutsu, kimono, kanokutsu, and kai were introduced from China and were also stipulated in the Taiho Code.

足を覆い包む形の日本の履物。皮革や錦，糸，麻，わらなどで作られた。縄文時代後期の遺跡から長沓形の土器が出土，また，古墳時代の人物埴輪も長沓や短沓をはいており，皮を縫いとじた沓と思われる。江田船山古墳(熊本県)からは金銅沓が出土しており，地方豪族が権威の象徴として儀礼の際に足を通したものと思われる。　奈良時代には舃（せきのくつ），履，靴（かのくつ），鞋（かい）等のくつが中国から伝来し，大宝律令にも定められた。
