Toshio Kamei

Toshio Kamei

Noh actor. Kadono school drummer. Born in Tokyo. In 1909 (Meiji 42), he joined the Nohgaku Association led by Ikeuchi Nobuyoshi and studied under Kawasaki Rikichi (later known as Kyuen). He made his debut the following year in 1910. He graduated from the Tokyo Music School (now the Tokyo University of the Arts, Faculty of Music), which took over the Nohgaku Association's training of musicians. In 1968 (Showa 43), he was recognized as a holder of an Important Intangible Cultural Property (Living National Treasure), and in December of the same year, he took over the custody of the head of the Kadono school after Yoshimi Yoshiki retired. He was known for his flexible and free-flowing performance. His second son, Tadao (1941- ), studied under Toshio and others from 1947 and made his debut in 1949. In 2000, he was placed under the custody of the head of the Kadono school, and in 2002 was designated a Living National Treasure.

能楽師。葛野(かどの)流大鼓(おおつづみ)方。東京生まれ。1909年(明治42)池内信嘉(のぶよし)の主宰する能楽会に入り、川崎利吉(りきち)(のち九淵(きゅうえん))に師事。翌1910年初舞台。能楽会の囃子(はやし)方養成事業を継承した東京音楽学校(現、東京芸術大学音楽学部)を卒業。1968年(昭和43)重要無形文化財保持者(人間国宝)の認定を受け、同年12月吉見嘉樹(よしみよしき)引退の後を受け葛野流宗家預りとなる。柔軟性に富む自在な演奏に定評があった。また、次男忠雄(ただお)(1941― )は1947年より俊雄らに師事し、1949年初舞台。2000年(平成12)葛野流宗家預りとなり、2002年人間国宝の認定を受けた。
