One of the four major schools of law officially recognized in Sunni Islam. Shafi'i jurisprudence was founded by Muhammad ibn Idris al-Shafi'i (767-820). In Shafi'i jurisprudence, the order of importance of the four foundations of Islamic jurisprudence is determined to be the Quran, Sunnah, Ijma, and Qiyas (analogy). A distinctive feature of Shafi'i jurisprudence is that it limits the scope of its application to issues that are not covered by the Quran, Sunnah, or Ijma. Most jurists in the Sunni areas of Egypt and Southwest Asia belong to this school.
