The great master of Sunni jurisprudence in Islam. His teachings gave birth to the Shafi'i school, one of the four officially recognized schools of Sunni jurisprudence. He grew up in Mecca, studied law under Malik ibn Anas in Medina, and was active in Iraq and Egypt. His grave is in Fustat, Egypt, and later became a pilgrimage site. He established the foundations of jurisprudence by limiting the sources of Islamic law to four: the Quran, Sunnah (the example of the Prophet Muhammad), Ijma (agreement of the Islamic community), and Qiyas (analogical judgment).
