Masaru Aoki

A Chinese literature scholar. His pen name was Meiyo. He was born in Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi Prefecture. He studied under Kano Naoki and Koda Rohan at the Faculty of Letters of Kyoto Imperial University, and in 1920 (Taisho 9), he founded the magazine "Shinagaku" with Kojima Yuma and Honda Shigeyuki, contributing to the formation of "Kyoto Sina-gaku." He served as professor at Tohoku University and Kyoto University, and after retirement, he lectured at Yamaguchi University and Ritsumeikan University until his death. His books include "History of Modern Chinese Drama," a study of the history of theater in the Ming and Qing dynasties that has been translated into Chinese, "History of Chinese Literary Thought" and "History of Literary Criticism in the Qing Dynasty," which are studies of literary thought, as well as commentaries on Chinese classics, art theory on calligraphy, paintings, music, and more, as well as extensive essays in the style of historical research on famous things, which showed his profound understanding of China.

中国文学者。号は迷陽(めいよう)。山口県下関に生まれる。京都帝国大学文科の狩野直喜(かのなおき)、幸田露伴(ろはん)に師事、1920年(大正9)小島祐馬(おじますけま)、本田成之(しげゆき)らと雑誌『支那(しな)学』を創刊、「京都シナ学」の形成に寄与した。東北大学、京都大学教授を歴任、定年後は山口大学、立命館大学に講じて没年に及んだ。著書に、中国語訳になった明清(みんしん)演劇史の研究『支那近世戯曲史』や、文芸思想研究の『支那文学思想史』『清代文学評論史』のほか、中国古典に関する注釈や書画、音楽などの芸術論から酒茶、食品に及ぶ博大な名物考証風の論考を残し、精深な中国理解を示した。
