1795‐1861 Slovak scholar and poet. In Czech, his name is Pavel Josef Šafařík. A leader of the national movement. Born into a family of evangelical pastors, he studied at the Faculty of Theology at the University of Jena. From 1819, he served as teacher and principal of a gymnasium in Novi Sad, Serbia, and in 1833, he moved to Prague, where he devoted himself to editing academic journals and research. In June 1848, he led the Slavic Congress with Palacký and others. He worked to awaken the Slovak people through a wide range of academic studies, including linguistics, translation, collecting and publishing folk songs, and studying the history and culture of the Slavic people.
