...Thomas Bewick (1753-1828) used woodblocks to bring to life simple rural landscapes and animals, W. Blake opened up an inner world through etchings, and finally E. Lear wrote The Nonsense Book (1846) using lithographs, inviting children into a world of absurdity that went beyond common sense. Henry Cole (1808-82), an art lover, published The Heirlooms (1841-47) and had the best artists of the day illustrate the books, and the brilliant G. Cruikshank provided vivid illustrations for the first English translation of the Grimm Brothers (1823). Eventually, in the second half of the 19th century, three brilliant British illustrators produced serious picture books. These include W. Crane, who exuded decorative elegance, Randolph Caldecott (1846-86), who portrayed manners in a realistic manner, and K. Greenaway, who displayed fresh elegance. *Some of the terminology that mentions "Cole, H." is listed below. Source | Heibonsha World Encyclopedia 2nd Edition | Information |
