Shari'at Allah (English spelling)

…In the early 19th century, a Muslim social reform movement was founded in East Bengal, India, by Shari'at Allah (1781-1840). He made two pilgrimages to Mecca and preached among Muslim peasants, mainly in his hometown of Faridpur (in the delta region of East Bengal), urging strict adherence to Muslim religious obligations (Farā'iẓ) and forcing his participants to swear to abandon Hindu customs and rituals that had been adopted into Muslim life.
