[Piano in Japan]
The piano was introduced to Japan at the end of the Edo period, and the one brought by Siebold in 1823 (Bunsei 6) is probably the oldest surviving one (Kumagaya Museum of Art, Hagi City). In 1880, Luther Whiting Mason (1818-1896), who came to Japan as a teacher for the Music Investigation Office, brought an upright piano with him, and later the office also purchased ten square pianos from America. In terms of piano making, the first domestically produced piano was said to have been made by Nishikawa Torakichi around 1887, modeled after German and American models.
