A village in Shimokita District, occupying the northeastern part of Shimokita Peninsula in Aomori Prefecture. Facing the Pacific Ocean to the east and the Tsugaru Strait to the north, the climate is strongly influenced by sea breezes throughout the year. The Shiriya Mine of Nippon Steel Mining faces the Tsugaru Strait and produces limestone. In addition, the Higashidori Nuclear Power Plant, jointly built by Tohoku Electric Power Company and Tokyo Electric Power Company, is located in Shiranuka, and there is a wind power generation facility in Iwaya, making the energy-related industry thriving. The Sarugamori Sand Dunes are also used as the Shimokita Test Site of the Ministry of Defense. The cool climate makes it unsuitable for agriculture, so livestock farming and fishing are practiced. Cape Shiriya, known for its Kandachime horses and lighthouse, is part of Shimokita Peninsula Quasi-National Park. 295.27 km2 . 7,252 people (2010).
