A dance. It is placed at the beginning or second of a suite, and has a moderate tempo in 4/4 time (often beginning with an upbeat). The origin of this dance, which means "German-like", is unknown, but in theoretical books from the late 15th century it was treated as a kind of bass dance, and it became popular in the 16th century. The early allemande was a simple 2/4 time dance consisting of 3 parts, with simple steps. Like the pavane, it often has a rapid 3/4 time dance at the end. The instrumental ensemble pieces that appeared in Germany in the early 17th century (Schein, Scheidt, etc.) inherited this tradition. The allemande as a dance completely disappeared in the 17th century, and instead it became an indispensable part of suites as a stylized dance. This new allemande was strongly influenced by the lute style of 17th century France, and was centered on contrapuntal techniques, in which short melodic phrases were passed between voices.
