A canal that connects Manchester in Greater Manchester, northwest of England, to the Mersey Estuary. It is 57 km long, 37 m wide at its widest, and 8.5 m deep at its deepest. It is the largest ocean-going canal in the UK, and can accommodate ships of up to 12,000 tons. It begins at Eastham on the south bank of the estuary, runs along the inlet to Runcorn, and then runs in a straight line east to prevent tidal inflow at Latchford lock. It then takes in the waters of the Mersey and Irwell to Manchester. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
