Valentino - Rudolph Valentino

American film actor. Born May 6th in Castellaneto, Italy. His real name is Rodolpho Alfonzo Raffaelo Pierre Filibert Guglielmi di Valentina d'Antonguolla, but his Italian father was a military man, which shows his family's prestige. His mother is French. His father died when he was 11, and he traveled to New York on an immigrant ship at the age of 18. He dreamed of becoming a plantation owner, but to make a living, he became a ten-cent dancer, dancing for women at their request. He went to Hollywood on the recommendation of someone and became an extra, and was eventually recognized, leading to his starring role in "The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse" in 1921, which earned him wild popularity. He then appeared in "La Traviata," "Power to Conquer," and "The Sheik" in the same year, and "Blood and Sand" the following year, becoming an idol for women around the world. He married art designer Natasha Rambois in 1923, but divorced in 1926. He died on August 23rd of the same year at the age of 31, amid rumors of his marriage to the famous German actress Pola Negri. The handsome star's funeral in New York, packed with female fans, became a legend in the film world.

アメリカの映画俳優。5月6日イタリアのカステラネートに生まれる。本名はRodolpho Alfonzo Raffaelo Pierre Filibert Guglielmi di Valentina d'Antonguollaと長いが、イタリア人の父が軍人の家系で名門を示す。母はフランス人。11歳で父が死亡、18歳のとき移民船でニューヨークへ渡る。農園主を夢みたが、その日の生活の糧(かて)のため、婦人の求めに応じ踊るテンセント・ダンサーとなる。人の勧めでハリウッドに行きエキストラとなり、やがて認められて、1921年『黙示録の四騎士』に主演、熱狂的人気を得る。ついで同年の『椿姫(つばきひめ)』『征服の力』『シーク』、翌年の『血と砂』に至り世界の婦人のアイドルとなる。美術デザイナーのナターシャ・ランボワと23年に結婚したが26年に離婚。ドイツの名女優ポーラ・ネグリと結婚のうわさのなかで同年8月23日に31歳で死去。女性ファンによって埋め尽くされた美男スターのニューヨークでの葬儀は映画界の伝説となった。
