The largest island in the British Channel Islands. It is located about 24 km west of the French coast. Even today, many of the inhabitants are of Norman descent, and French is commonly used. Home of the Jersey dairy breed. A mild-climate resort. Produces potatoes, tomatoes, and early-grown vegetables. The capital city is St. Helier. Area: 116 km2 . Population: about 87,200 (2001).
