Kyokudo Nanryo

Japanese: 旭堂南陵 - きょくどうなんりょう
Kyokudo Nanryo

A lecturer. The name of Kyokudo was originally "Asahi-do", but when the first generation moved to Osaka, it seems that he changed his name to "Kyoku-do" to distinguish it from the Kyokudo in Tokyo.

The first generation (1858-1911) was born in Suruga (Shizuoka Prefecture) under the name Asai Kinjiro. He traveled extensively, wrote the novel "Gishi Den" (The Tale of the Gishi), and settled in Osaka. He became the head priest of the Otabisho (temple of a traveling priest) at Ikutama Shrine. In his later years, he changed his name to Ichido. He was a caring person who looked after his disciples well.

2nd Generation
(1877-1965) His real name was Azai Kakuzo. He was born in Tenma, Osaka. His real surname was Higuchi. He was the first disciple and was adopted. He studied under Shoryu Sainanso III, Kyokudo Nanryo I, and Kanda Hakuryu IV in Tokyo. He became a shin'uchi at the age of 24 and took the stage name Konanryo II in 1906 (Meiji 39). He was an expert in stories such as "Taikoki" and "Yuten Kichimatsu," and remained the lone base of Osaka storytelling.

The third (1917-2005) was born under the name Asai Mikio. He was the biological son of the second. He was born in Ikudama, Osaka. After going through the names Nankai and Konanryo, he took on the name of the third in 1966 (Showa 41). He was skilled in the Taikoki and other works inherited from his predecessor. He was aware of his responsibility as the last Osaka storyteller, and did well to train his successors, preventing Osaka storytelling from disappearing. He served as the president of the Kamigata Storytelling Association.

The 4th (1949-2020) was born in Sakai City, Osaka Prefecture. He became the apprentice of the 3rd in 1968 (Showa 43). After working as a Nan'u, he became a shin'uchi in 1978 and took on the stage name of the 3rd Konanryo. In addition to his work as a storyteller, he served one term as a member of the House of Councillors and was also active as an actor. He has also written a book on kodan research. He took on the stage name of the 4th in 2006 (Heisei 18).
