Evil eye

Japanese: 邪視 - じゃし

When there is a belief that misfortune will befall people, livestock, or objects that are gazed upon by a certain person, the power of such eyes is called the evil eye. It is often believed that wealthy people are the victims. One explanation for this is that belief in the evil eye is based on the fear of jealousy from others. It has also been pointed out that the evil eye is similar to witchcraft in that it is believed to harm the person who has it regardless of their will. Various things are used as talismans to ward off the evil eye depending on the culture.
