A peninsula that juts out into the Sea of Japan at the base of the Oshima Peninsula in western Hokkaido. It is based on the Neogene layer, and on top of that are volcanic bodies made of andesite and quartz trachyte, forming the Shiribeshi volcanic group. In the northern mountain range there are mountains such as Shakotan-dake (1,255 meters), Yobetsu-dake (1,298 meters), Ponneanchi-dake (1,145 meters), and Sannai-dake (1,091 meters), while in the southern mountain range there are mountains such as Kumaoi-dake (805 meters), Tengu-dake (872 meters), and Hachinai-dake (944 meters). The mountains approach the coast and form sea cliffs of 20 to 80 meters. There are many capes on the peninsula, including Cape Maruyama, Cape Makka, Cape Shakotan, Cape Kamui, Cape Kawashiro, and Cape Ryujin. The rivers that cut through the mountains are small, but in some places they are rapid and drop like waterfalls. Due to the lack of flat land, agriculture has not developed, and fishing villages such as the two major fishing ports of Yoichi and Iwanai, Furubira, Bikuni, Irika, Yobetsu (Shakotan Town), and Kamoenai are scattered throughout the area. In place of the herring fishery of the past, the area now catches pollock, sand lance, and other fish. National Route 229 runs along the coast. The entire coastline forms the Niseko-Shakotan-Otaru Coast Quasi-National Park. [Hideyoshi Segawa] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
