Calomel electrode

Japanese: 甘汞電極 - かんこうでんきょく（英語表記）calomel electrode

This is one of the reference electrodes and is also called a calomel electrode. First, pure mercury (Hg) is placed in a glass container as shown in the figure, then mercury chloride (I) (calomel) Hg ₂ Cl ₂ and a paste-like mixture of mercury and potassium chloride (KCl) solution are placed in the container. When a potassium chloride solution saturated with mercury chloride (I) is added on top, a calomel electrode is created, represented by Hg | Hg ₂ Cl ₂ | KCl solution. The electrode reaction of this electrode system is 1/2Hg ₂ Cl ₂ + e ^- ⇄Hg + Cl ^- , and the equilibrium electrode potential differs depending on the concentration of the potassium chloride solution.

基準電極の一つでカロメル電極ともいう。図のようなガラス容器の中に，まず純粋な水銀Hgを入れ，つぎに塩化水銀(I)(甘汞)Hg₂Cl₂と水銀と塩化カリウムKCl水溶液とをよく混ぜ合わせて糊状にしたものを入れる。そのうえに塩化水銀(I)で飽和した塩化カリウム水溶液をみたすと，　Hg｜Hg₂Cl₂｜KCl水溶液で表される甘汞電極ができあがる。この電極系の電極反応は　1/2Hg₂Cl₂＋e^－⇄Hg＋Cl^－で，平衡電極電位は塩化カリウム溶液の濃度で異なる。
