A classical Indian Sanskrit play. Its correct name is Abhijñānaśakuntalā. In Japan, it is called Shakuntala Remembered. It was written by the poet Kalidasa in the 4th or 5th century. It is based on and adapted from the epic Mahabharata and the Hindu holy book Padma Purana. Its beautiful prose and concept are world-famous as a masterpiece of Indian literature. King Dushyanta falls in love with Shakuntala, a celestial maiden's daughter whom he meets in the mountains. He gives her his wedding ring and returns to his castle, but the hermit casts a spell on him to make him forget her. Shakuntala, who has lost her ring, comes to visit him, but the king's memory does not return. One day, the king's memory returns when the ring is found in the belly of a fish, and he defeats the demon with the help of a messenger from heaven, and is reunited with Shakuntala in heaven.
