Insulin shock therapy

A treatment for schizophrenia. A high dose of insulin is injected subcutaneously while fasting, causing a coma due to hypoglycemia, and 30 to 60 minutes later the patient is awakened by an intravenous glucose injection and given a substantial meal. This is repeated 20 to 40 times, which constitutes one course of treatment. There is a risk of accidents, so it has rarely been used since drug therapy was introduced. 統合失調症（精神分裂病）の治療法。空腹時にインシュリン高単位を皮下注射し，低血糖による昏睡(こんすい)を起こさせ，30〜60分後ブドウ糖静脈注射で覚醒(かくせい)させ，十分な食事を与える。これを20〜40回繰り返し１クールとし治療上の単位とする。偶発事故の危険もあり，薬物療法が導入されてからはほとんど用いられない。
