A small military aircraft used to support ground troops on the battlefield. (1) Its main roles are as a plane for commanders and staff officers to command operations from the air, (2) to transport commanders and documents, and (3) to relay radio information on the battlefield. In general, it also often performs other missions such as aerial observation of fire effectiveness and reconnaissance. Due to the nature of the mission, it is necessary to be able to take off and land in areas close to ground forces, so relatively small aircraft that are easy to operate and have short takeoff and landing runways are used. Liaison aircraft are often small civilian aircraft that have been repurposed, such as the U.S. Air Force's U3, a converted Cessna M310, and the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force's LR1, a converted Mitsubishi MU2.
