Japanese: 下館[市] - しもだて

An old city in the west of Ibaraki Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. It is located between the Kinugawa River and the Kokai River. The central city was a castle town of the Ishikawa clan in the early modern period, and flourished as a distribution center for Mooka cotton. After the Meiji period, tabi sole weaving flourished, and until recently it almost monopolized the national market. In addition to food industries such as confectionery and flour milling, an industrial complex was developed in the west of the city, and factories producing communication equipment, concrete, etc. have also moved in. It is a junction of the Mito Line, the Mooka Railway, and the Kanto Railway Joso Line, and in the 1990s the city area was developed and it has become the commercial center of the west of the prefecture. The surrounding area is a typical rice paddy area in the prefecture, but the conversion to suburban agriculture is also progressing. In March 2005, it merged with Sekijo Town, Akeno Town, and Kyowa Town in Makabe County to become a city, Chikusei City. ^{86.25 km2} . 65,345 people (2003).

茨城県西部の旧市。1954年市制。鬼怒川と小貝川の間にある。中心市街は近世石川氏の城下町で，真岡(もおか)木綿の集散地として栄え，明治以後は足袋底織が興り，近年まで全国市場をほぼ独占した。製菓，製粉などの食品工業のほか，市西部には工業団地が造成され，通信機，コンクリートなどの工場も進出。水戸線，真岡鉄道，関東鉄道常総線の分岐点で，1990年代には市街地の整備も進み，県西部の商業の中心をなす。周辺は県内では代表的な水田地帯であるが，都市近郊型農業への転換も進展している。2005年３月真壁郡関城町，明野町，協和町と合併し市制，筑西市となる。86.25km²。６万5345人（2003）。
