A painter from the late Edo period. Born in Kyoto. His given name was Chien, his pen name was Koju, and his other name was Gayu. He was born into a family of sake brewers, but he disliked the family business and became a disciple of Ishida Yutei. He is said to have also studied with Maruyama Okyo. After Okyo's death, Nakanaka said that he was not Okyo's disciple, so when Kishimoto went to Maruyama Ozui to check the student register, Nakanaka's name was written in his own handwriting under the section on students. After that, he visited temples and taught himself ancient paintings from the Yuan and Ming dynasties, and also studied the Tosa school, forming a school known as the Hara school. His style is characterized by a precise decorative style that combines the Tosa school, Maruyama Shijo school, and Kishi school. He also studied court etiquette and customs, and excelled in painting court craftsmen. He participated in the construction of the Imperial Palace during the Kansei era, and painted the cedar door paintings of the Tsunegoten palace. He is said to have continued to paint until his death at the age of 88, and is buried at Tenshoji Temple in Kyoto. 江戸後期の画家。京都の人。名は致遠,字は子重,別号は臥遊。生家は酒造家であったが,家業を嫌い,石田幽汀の門に入る。円山応挙にもついたらしい。応挙没後,在中は自分は応挙の弟子などではないといっているので,岸駒が円山応瑞のところに行って門人帳を調べると,入門者の項に在中の自筆で書いてあったという。その後,寺々を訪ねて元,明の古画を独学し,また土佐派を学ぶなどして原派と呼ばれる一派を形成した。土佐派,円山四条派,岸派などを融合した精密な装飾的画風に特色がある。また,有職故実を研究して有職人物画を得意とした。寛政の御所造営に参加,常御殿の杉戸絵などを描いた。88歳で没するまで絵筆を握ったといわれ,京都の天性寺に葬られた。代表作に相国寺方丈の「補陀落図」「琴棋書画図」の襖絵などがある。<参考文献>京都府立総合資料館『京都画派の名家 原在中とその流派/図録』,山川武『日本屏風絵集成』8巻
