Mitra (English spelling)

Mitra (English spelling)
A god in Hindu mythology. He is inseparably linked to Varuna, the leader of a group of gods collectively known as Aditya. Mithra means measurer in Sanskrit. He was therefore the sun god, the god of contracts and justice, who measured years and human relationships. In the Rig-Veda, there is only one independent hymn dedicated to Mithra. According to it, he is rich in bounty, saves humans from troubles, is vast and powerful, and watches over humans without blinking an eye. He also leads people to agreement and unity. Humans aspire to abide by Mithra's laws and to live in his goodwill and friendship.

Mithra
Mithra

A Persian god who corresponds to the Indian Mithra and later became the chief deity of the mystery religion Mithraism, whose worship spread to various parts of Western Europe. Originally, like the Indian Mithra, he was thought to have been a supreme deity with a judicial character, protecting contracts, friendship, and good faith, and presiding over justice, but in the Avesta he appears as a brave war god who uses a club as a weapon to defeat demons. He has a strong character as a god of light, and later came to be identified with the sun god.

Mithra
