A chain of islands stretching 200km from northeast to southwest on the northwest coast of Norway. The coast is mountainous, with many bays and islets, and the highest point is 1,161m above sea level. The coastal waters are some of the world's leading cod and herring fishing grounds. The centre is Svolvaer on Østvogay island. Approximately 1,227km 2 . Population: approximately 30,000 people.
