1777‐1835 French surgeon. Born in Pierre-Buffières, Limousin, he gained fame as chief surgeon and professor of clinical surgery at the Hôtel-Dieu Hospital in Paris. In 1812, he performed the first successful mandibular resection, and then succeeded in ligating the external iliac and subclavian arteries. He energetically pioneered new surgical techniques based on pathological anatomy, which was just beginning to flourish at the time. He also focused on traumatic aneurysms and invented the surgical technique for creating an artificial anus. In 1823, he became the personal physician to Louis XVIII, and served his successor, Charles X. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
